Things To Do In Weymouth

Things to do in Weymouth - Weymouth really is one of the few remaining seaside towns that thrive both in and out of the main summer season.

During the Spring/Summer seasons, the rides are open, the beachside kiosks thrive and even the donkeys are given a run for their money every day!

With its world famous golden sands stretching out along the bay of Weymouth, tourists flock here year after year to enjoy everything Weymouth has to offer.

But what if you fancied a break "out of season"?

Well, believe you me; there is no need to think you'd be arriving to a town with tumbleweed blowing down the street! On finer days (and there really are loads here in Weymouth!) the locals flock along the beach and the promenade for walks, rides on bikes and generally a good lungful of good British air!

When the sea whips up, out come the kite surfers, windsurfers and canoeists...and with great waves crashing in, they really are a spectacle to watch!

Things to do in Weymouth - Windsurfing

Weymouth and Portland is renowned as being one of the best bays for windsurfing in the country and there are many clubs and associations that keen windsurfers can become part of down here. The main bay of Weymouth allows windsurfers the full force of the incoming sea, whereas the more sheltered waters within the harbour walls of Portland provide ideal conditions for both beginner and professional windsurfers alike.

The sea within Portland Harbour, and the area known locally as Overcombe Corner are the focal point for the ever popular annual Volvo RYA Windsurfing Youth and Masters National Championships. Taking place in September, it is looked forward to by all the competitors as a great end-of-season championship.

There are 11 classes within the competition for both male and female surfers and trophies on offer for the top three in each class as well as first newcomer.

The other event that is held annually within the waters at Weymouth, is the Four Nations Windsurfing Championships. Again a host of events are held, with trophies won for both male and female windsurfers.

There are many watersport shops in both Weymouth and on Portland that offer clients tuition, hire of equipment and advice.

The sea around Overcombe Corner has designated areas designed to separate windsurfers from other beach users therefore offering an element of safety.

Things to do in Weymouth - Kite Surfing

This relatively new sport came to the waters of Weymouth in the year 2000 and originally caused quite a stir! Nowadays, during the right conditions, kite surfers are a plenty. Again Portland Harbour offers a safer area to kite surf and practice your skills, with shallower waters and prevailing winds.

Overcombe corner offers kite surfers fantastic waves during the right conditions, and the extreme athlete can really get to grips with the conditions.

Note: It is important to note: A permit to kite is required if you are wanting to kite surf in Portland Harbour.
