Weymouth - Whats on in August 2008Whats on in August 2008? Monday 4th August, Monday 11th August, Monday 25th August Fireworks, music and competitions on the beach. Summer wouldn't be summer in Weymouth without the annual fireworks off the beach every Monday night in August. Starting at 9.30pm, the displays take place from a floating pontoon in Weymouth bay. Fantastic fireworks are then seen for miles around. Monday 18th August - Wednesday 20th August Weymouth Carnival Three days of action packed fun celebrate this year's carnival. On Monday, fun on the beach with many games all taking place in the Sharkey's sponsored arena. Anyone wanting to take part in any of the games can sign up 15 minutes before the races and competitions begin. Later in the day is a family fancy dress run, and from 6pm - 9pm Wessex fm will be broadcasting live from the beach. Tuesday the beach fun continues with a 5-a-side football tournament throughout most of the day and for those of a more artistic nature, a sand sculpture competition for the young and old. Create the best possible sculpture using the world famous Weymouth sand. Wednesday is Carnival day!! The grand parade is open to everyone, no motorised vehicles this year, so use your imagination!! Whether you are local or visiting on your holidays and you fancy being part of the grand parade, whether as a business or just individuals in fancy dress then go to the official carnival website shown below and fill out the entry form. Hourly displays will be performed from above by The Red Arrows, Wing Walkers, London Fire Brigade Parachute Display Team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire. Stalls along the Esplanade will be selling a vast array of goodies from charity groups, trades and artisans. The day is not complete without the big firework display at 9.30pm in the bay this year sponsored by the R.A.F. Dragon boats are long, narrow boats powered by oarsmen. The boats are highly decorative, usually with dragon motifs and the cox beats a huge drum by which the oarsman row. Originally from China, Dragon racing is thought to be one of the earliest of mankind's organised sports. 30th - 31st August Weymouth Angling and Sea Fishing Society Sea Fishing Festival Weymouth and its surrounding areas offers great cliff and rock fishing points that are regarded as being some of the best in the U.K. The Weymouth Angling Society has, since 1900, held its annual festival and competition.
